Spin Of Matter

I have told you about spin of sub atomic matter  . Every subatomic substance and photons have a definite spin . But  , it is too mathematical to prove that statement . So, after much thought I came to the conclusion that I am not going to prove it right in front of you , but will give you applications about this principle . So , let us continue our journey to one of the important aspects of this important field , The Uncertainty Principle .

This uncertainty principle protects the quantum mechanics . Eager to know how ? Follow me on my next post , The Uncertainty Principle .

Matter waves

As I have said that matter is also a wave . Now , I mean to prove it . All this was proposed by Louis de Broglie.
He had also a good reason why we can't see this property of matter . The answer resides in his formula

                  Momentum  X  Wavelength = Plank's Constant
Since , our mass is greater , momentum is greater and wavelength is less . But, what is the prove of this ?

Let me solve this for once and all .

Light waves can cause interference patterns . This means that light plus light can be double light or zero light .
To explain this effect we have to consider light as a wave . But , other experiments also show that light is a particulate . So , what if we define interference patterns in terms of particle nature of light .
Here , the trouble begins and we have to admit for once and all that matter can have its wavelength . Plus , it was also discovered after some time that electrons behave much like light particles , photons .QED ( Funny)

Characteristics Of Light

I promised in my earlier blog that I will prove the postulates of quantum theory to be true . They require a lot of time so , one postulate at one time .

Light is an electromagnetic wave that is composed of particles called photons .

If we bombard light on some materials like silicon( metalloids) we will get an electric current . This is photoelectric effect . This is because light hit electrons and made them move causing an electric current .
But , it was also found that this current , amount of electrons displaced depended on frequency rather than intensity of light .

So , it was postulated that light is an electromagnetic wave ( by Maxwell ) that is composed of photons .

Quantum Theory And Weird Electrons

In order to learn quantum mechanics you need to learn some postulates by heart . We will , of course , discuss why that is so but later on . Quantum mechanics is the only branch where we look up for probabilities rather than certainities . Even Einstein said that god do not play dices with the world .

So, focus on these postulates -
1. Light is a form of energy which is composed of particles named as photons and matter ( subatomic ) is also a wave .
2. All these also have their discrete spin .

I can hear moans and groans . I know that it is very difficult to believe in these postulates . But , believe it or not they are absolutely true .

You can think why we are not able to see these things . So the answer is ALL THIS IS OCCURING ON A SUBATOMIC SCALE . Notice , it is important . In next blog , we will look for why these postulates are true and there are some interesting facts to know , of course . Meet you in next blog .

Thomas Young Experiment

There was always a conflict between the people who considered light as made of particles or waves . But , the conflict came to an end because of Thomas Young's Experiment . This experiment also started the birth of quantum mechanics . Thomas Young showed through the means of interference ( time to brush up high school concepts ) that light is an wave .  But , some other scientists like Plank showed him wrong by means of Black body Radiation ( content for another post ) . This lead to the birth of Quantum Theory of light which postulated that light is a form of electromagnetic radiation ( showed by Maxwell ) which consists of particles called photons .

Birth Of Quantum Mechanics

The birth of quantum mechanics is very intresting . We are not going to study whole of it's history . But , we will get an overview of the history in so e of the following blogs .

What Is Quantum Mechanics?

Quantum Mechanics can be considered as the science of unimaginable . Quantum Mechanics deals with the things which we cannot see. Closely related is Particle Physics . Through this blog will study this and in a math free manner.
We will also look at the various realms of this branch and its applications. Welcome to this colourful journey.
